Q & A with Wyatt of Grillin' in the Hoof
Q: What was the idea behind your brand/social channels?
A: Originally I started posting photos of my cooks as advertising for my BBQ shop. Later I decided to create a new brand for my own bbq adventures and left the shop account as just product advertising. My brand 'Grillin' the Hoof BBQ' was inspired by my hometown's (Vanderhoof) nickname 'The Hoof'. The H bar in my logo was the cattle brand from my grandparents farm.
Q: What inspires you to BBQ?
A: Good home cooked meals for my family is all the inspiration I need! Plus everything just tastes better cooked outside.
Q: If you had a superpower, what would it be and why?
A: Maybe invisibility. It just seems like a fun way to mess with people!
Q: What is your favourite vegetable on the BBQ?
A: My wife tells me potatoes don't count… So, I'd have to say peppers. Pablanos and jalapeños are some of my favorites.
Q: What are your goals/dreams in the BBQ/cooking world?
A: It's always gratifying when companies love my content and want me to promote their products. So, working with great brands is one goal. I have thought about working on my own line of products, like rubs and sauces since starting my BBQ adventure. That has been a goal on my mind that I hope to achieve in the near future.
Q: Who do you look up to in the BBQ world and why?
A: I haven't put much thought into that before. But, If I had to choose I would probably say Matt Pittman. He has grown his brand into arguably one of the most recognized BBQ brands around and watching his videos was part of what got me into BBQ in the first place.
Q: For newbies starting out, what kind of rig do you think they should use?
A: I started out on a Traeger Pro780. It the grill that really got me into BBQ. I think it's a great place to start for anyone beginning to BBQ. Easy to use, good quality, and they produce some amazing food!
Q: What’s your favourite Rub?
A: Cluck & Squeal Rib Formula! It works on everything and that color is second to none! There is so much flavour not too sweet, and it's unique. It doesn't taste like just any bbq Rub. It really stands out!
Q: What is your favourite sauce?
A: This is a tough one. I like to make alot of my own sauces and I'm never done experimenting. Two of my top favourite hot sauces however, are Four Fathers Jalapeño and Fury Sriracha!
Q: Favourite cut of meat?
A: There's so much to choose from and I tend to get bored of the same thing too many times in a short span, but I do tend to cook alot of beef ribs (plate style) and they would absolutely be one of my top favorite cuts
Q: What is your favourite thing to BBQ, and to eat?
A: Some of my ultimate favorite things to BBQ are appetizers and snacks. Things like jalapeño poppers, wings, pig shots, etc. We've always enjoyed having appy nights for family movies or get togethers. Cooks like that are so much fun and there's so many different ways to get creative with those types of cooks.
Q: What is something you cook or BBQ that most people wouldn’t think was going to be good but it’s delicious?
A: My maple bacon Jam. So many people give me a look when I say 'bacon' and 'jam' together. It's not even an overly uncommon thing to cook, but a lot of people think it sounds odd. It is one of my all time favorite condiments!
Q: What is a good tip about using Cluck & Squeal when cooking?
A: Use Rib Formula on Rotisserie Chicken! And don't be cheap about it. Give it a real good coating. You'll thank me!
